If you’d love a wedding photographer that will focus on making sure you feel super comfortable and enjoy every moment of your wedding day to the fullest, then you’ll want to read on to get to know this dynamic duo more.
Let's hear what Paul of Paulfolio Photography had to say when we quizzed him...
- Who runs Paulfolio and how did you start out in business?
We’re a husband and wife team called Paul and Heidi. I (Paul) did a degree in Photography at Bath School of Art and Design. Heidi first picked up a camera while we were dating as she quickly discovered that she was the third wheel to Paul and his camera! From there, we got married and moved to Worcester where Heidi was training to be a primary school teacher. Paulfolio started as a part-time job but evolved into something much more when Heidi moved from primary teaching to run Paulfolio full time. Alongside weddings, we also specialise in newborn and brand photography.
- What is your greatest fear when you are working on a wedding?
We don’t think fear is a word we would use for weddings, we would say more our ‘worry’ is finding the right lighting at a bride’s house, or at the venue as we prefer to shoot all-natural light. We have lighting options to help us deal with these, but having enough light is always the worry when shooting weddings.
- What is your greatest extravagance that helps you get through the day?
Since we added a hot meal to our contract, this has helped us get through the day knowing that we’ll have a hot meal at the same time that everyone else does – which always helps to motivate you! Other than that, having the kit we have for wedding days is an extravagance, we want to make sure we can capture everything when it happens perfectly, and making sure we have the right kit for your wedding day helps us achieve this.
- What is your favourite theme or style that you’ve seen at a wedding?
One of our favourite weddings has to be that of a couple we shot in Autumn of 2018. As the wedding was later in the year the colours were gorgeous and everything just looked great. They went with an Autumn colour palette and everything was dressed perfectly. Also, the lighting on the day with the low sun, and crisp air just added to the whole theme and feel of the day.
- What is the hardest thing a couple has ever asked you to do for their day?
One of the hardest things has to be the sparkler exits. It does look amazing if done well, however getting it right from a photographer’s point of view is hard. You go from pitch black to bright light and then all gone again in 30 seconds. This doesn’t give a lot of time to get the shot. We have done a number now and know what we need to do, so they are a lot of fun.
- When was the last time you laughed out loud at a wedding? What happened?
Before we even get to the wedding day, we love spending time with our couples, getting to know what they love and their quirks. This means that we have a strong relationship with each couple and always thoroughly enjoy their wedding day.
We shot a beautiful wedding last year at the Tithe Barn in Petersfield. The wedding was stunning, and we had a great day. There were many laugh out loud moments during the day but the best one has to be the best man's speech. Some of the stories, not to be repeated mind, were just so funny, and had everyone in stitches!
It’s so lovely to see the friendship between brothers and the bond they have for each other.
- What moment are you most proud of in your profession?
Wow, this one is hard, for us just being able to go full time as professional photographers is something we are super proud of. It has been a dream of mine (Paul) to be a photographer since I was 16 and so having a successful photography business with my wife really is the ultimate dream and makes all the hard work worthwhile. Being able to work together will always be such a privilege.
- Where is your favourite setting for a wedding?
Of all the venues we have worked in, our favourite has got to be Birtsmorton Court near Malvern. The venue is stunning - a beautiful manor house with its own moat and bridge, surrounded by beautiful gardens with the backdrop of the Malvern hills. The main wedding takes place at the church just outside the grounds of the house, then on to the main house for canapés and photographs, before heading off to the beautiful marquee and barn for the wedding breakfast. It’s a stunning venue, and the staff are lovely.
- What is the one thing you can’t live without in your job?
As a photographer, its sounds obvious that my camera is the one thing that makes our jobs easier. But having a smaller more compact camera makes our jobs a lot easier. You can imagine carrying two cameras and all the kit around all day can get pretty heavy, so making sure we only have the right kit we need makes this a little bit lighter. We need to have something we can 100% trust is going to do the job every time - we know we can trust our Sony Mirrorless Cameras.
- What question do you wish every couple would ask you when you are meeting with them the first time?
We love getting to know our couples and are always willing to help them out in their planning where we can. We’d love every couple to ask us about other suppliers we can recommend and how we can help them out with their wedding in general. We might be their wedding photographers, but we are always willing to help them get the best service from every other supplier too. We know hundreds of fabulous suppliers from working in the industry, so can always recommend someone that is fab!
- Where do you draw inspiration from for your work?
We love looking at other photographers work as well as photos taken at venues that we’re due to shoot at. This gives us huge inspiration for what is achievable and what hidden charms a venue may hold. We also love to use Pinterest to give us ideas, and we invite our couples to do the same and share it with us.
- What would people be surprised to learn about you and/or your work?
We love to add value wherever we can with our clients, and love to give them some little gifts along the way to keep them excited about their wedding! We send a fun questionnaire to our clients when they book us so that we can find out things that they love - simple things like ‘chocolate, sweets or crisps?’ ‘wine, beer or soft drinks?’. This way when we meet them, we can have that little something that they love ready for them in our fridge or cupboards to make our meetings that extra bit special and a little bit more personal :-) It’s always well received and couples love that we give so much attention and put so much effort into them.
